Pratibha Patil Biography
Pratibha Patil is an Indian politician and the first woman to serve as the President of India. She was born on December 19, 1934, in Nadgaon village in Maharashtra, British India (now in Maharashtra, India). She comes from a humble background and her father, Narayan Rao Patil, was a landowner and a politician.
Patil completed her early education in R.R. Patil College in Amravati and later moved to Pune for higher studies. She earned a Master's degree in Political Science and Economics from Mooljee Jetha College in Jalgaon and later obtained a law degree from Government Law College in Mumbai.
Pratibha Patil entered politics in the 1960s and joined the Indian National Congress (INC), which was the ruling party at the time. She held various positions within the party, including serving as a member of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee. In 1962, she was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and served as a member for four consecutive terms.
Her political career continued to flourish, and she held several ministerial positions in the Maharashtra state government, including the portfolios of Public Health, Social Welfare, and Tourism. In 2004, she became the Governor of Rajasthan, becoming the first woman to hold that position.
In 2007, Pratibha Patil made history when she was elected as the 12th President of India, succeeding Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Her election as the President marked a significant milestone in Indian politics, as she became the first woman to hold the highest office in the country. During her presidency, she focused on promoting education, women's empowerment, and rural development.
After completing her five-year term as President, Pratibha Patil stepped down from office in 2012. Since then, she has remained active in various social and charitable organizations, working towards the welfare of marginalized sections of society.
