Mary Kom Biography

 Mary Kom, whose full name is Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte, is an Indian boxer and one of the most successful female boxers in the world. She was born on March 1, 1983, in Kangathei, a small village in the northeastern state of Manipur, India.

Mary Kom grew up in a humble family and had a keen interest in athletics from a young age. Initially, she participated in various sports, including athletics and volleyball. However, her interest in boxing was sparked after watching the Manipur boxer Dingko Singh win a gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games.

In 2000, Mary Kom began her boxing career and faced numerous challenges due to the lack of facilities and proper training opportunities for female boxers in India at that time. Nevertheless, her determination and perseverance led her to achieve significant milestones in the sport.

Mary Kom's breakthrough came in 2001 when she won a silver medal at the inaugural Women's World Amateur Boxing Championships held in the United States. She followed this with several remarkable achievements, including winning gold medals in the Asian Women's Boxing Championship from 2003 to 2010, and multiple medals at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships.

One of her most notable accomplishments came at the 2012 Summer Olympics held in London, where women's boxing was included for the first time. Mary Kom competed in the flyweight category (51 kg) and won a bronze medal, becoming the first Indian woman boxer to achieve an Olympic medal.
