Kocheril Raman Narayanan, popularly known as K.R. Narayanan, was an eminent Indian statesman who served as the 10th President of India from 1997 to 2002. He was born on October 27, 1920, in Uzhavoor village in the state of Kerala, India. Narayanan's tenure as the President was significant as he was the first individual from the Dalit (formerly known as "untouchable") community to hold the highest office in the country.

Narayanan had a humble upbringing and faced many hardships during his early years due to caste-based discrimination. He excelled academically and earned a Bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of Travancore. He later obtained a Master's degree in Political Science from the University of London.

Narayanan began his career as a lecturer at the University of Delhi and subsequently entered the Indian Foreign Service in 1949. He served in various diplomatic capacities in countries such as Myanmar (formerly Burma), Japan, the United Kingdom, and Turkey. Narayanan's diplomatic career spanned over three decades, during which he gained a reputation for his intellect, integrity, and commitment to social justice.

In 1984, Narayanan transitioned to politics and joined the Indian National Congress party. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of the Indian Parliament) and later served as the Vice President of India from 1992 to 1997. During his tenure as Vice President, he focused on issues related to social justice, education, and human rights.

In 1997, Narayanan was elected as the President of India, succeeding Shankar Dayal Sharma. As President, he continued his advocacy for social justice and worked towards bridging the gaps between different sections of society. Narayanan was known for his humble and unassuming nature, and he made efforts to connect with the common people of India.

After completing his term as President in 2002, Narayanan retired from active politics. He continued to be involved in various social and educational initiatives. He was awarded several honorary degrees and accolades for his contributions to Indian society.

K.R. Narayanan passed away on November 9, 2005, at the age of 85. He is remembered as a visionary leader who championed the cause of social equality and worked tirelessly for the betterment of marginalized communities in India. His life and achievements serve as an inspiration to millions across the country.
