Azim Hashim Premji was born on July 24, 1945, in Mumbai, India. He belongs to a Gujarati Muslim family. His father, Mohamed Hashem Premji, was a successful businessman who founded Western Indian Vegetable Products Ltd, which later became Wipro Limited. Azim Premji completed his schooling at St. Mary's School in Mumbai and then pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in the United States.

In 1966, tragedy struck the Premji family when Azim's father passed away suddenly. At the age of 21, Azim Premji had to take over the family business. Under his leadership, Wipro diversified its operations from vegetable oils and consumer products to the IT industry.
