Biju Patnaik Biography

 Biju Patnaik, whose full name was Biju Patnaik Chandra Shekhar, was a prominent Indian politician, freedom fighter, and aviator. He was born on March 5, 1916, in Cuttack, Odisha, which was then a part of British India. Biju Patnaik played a significant role in the independence movement of India and later served as the Chief Minister of Odisha.

Biju Patnaik came from a politically active family. His father, Nandini Satpathy, was a prominent lawyer and a Congress leader, which influenced Biju's early political leanings. He completed his education in Odisha and then went on to pursue a degree in aeronautical engineering from the prestigious Aeronautical Training Institute in London.

During World War II, Biju Patnaik joined the Royal Indian Air Force and served as a pilot. He flew numerous missions over Burma (now Myanmar) and transported soldiers and supplies to support the Allied forces. His bravery and contributions earned him several accolades, including the prestigious Distinguished Flying Cross.

After India gained independence in 1947, Biju Patnaik became increasingly involved in politics. He joined the Indian National Congress and emerged as a prominent leader in Odisha. In 1952, he was elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly, and in 1961, he became the Chief Minister of Odisha for the first time. He served two non-consecutive terms as Chief Minister, from 1961 to 1963 and again from 1990 to 1995.

As Chief Minister, Biju Patnaik implemented several developmental initiatives and reforms, focusing on industrialization, infrastructure development, and poverty alleviation. He played a crucial role in establishing several public sector industries in Odisha, including Paradip Port, Rourkela Steel Plant, and Hirakud Dam. His contributions to the development of Odisha earned him the title "Builder of Modern Odisha."

Biju Patnaik's political career was marked by his active participation in national politics as well. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in both the Lok Sabha (lower house) and the Rajya Sabha (upper house) at various times. He was known for his close association with national leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.

Apart from his political and aviation career, Biju Patnaik was also actively involved in philanthropy and social causes. He founded the Kalinga Foundation, which aimed to promote education, healthcare, and cultural activities in Odisha.

Biju Patnaik passed away on April 17, 1997, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, courage, and dedication to the welfare of Odisha. He is remembered as one of the most influential figures in Odisha's history, and his contributions continue to inspire generations of leaders and citizens alike.
