Vikram Lal Biography
Vikram Lal comes from a distinguished business family. His grandfather, Shri Brijmohan Lall Munjal, was the founder of the Hero Group, which is one of the largest business conglomerates in India. The Hero Group is primarily known for its two-wheeler manufacturing company, Hero MotoCorp.
Vikram Lal completed his education in India and then pursued his higher studies in the United States. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and a Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Michigan.
After completing his education, Vikram Lal joined the International Harvester Company in the United States. He gained valuable experience in the automotive industry during his tenure there. In 1970, he returned to India and joined Eicher Motors Limited, a company founded by his father, Shri Ramesh Chandra Lal. At that time, Eicher Motors was primarily involved in the manufacture of tractors.
Under Vikram Lal's leadership, Eicher Motors underwent a significant transformation. He focused on diversifying the company's product portfolio and expanding its presence in various sectors. Eicher Motors ventured into the commercial vehicle segment by collaborating with Sweden's Volvo Group. This collaboration led to the formation of VE Commercial Vehicles Limited (VECV), a joint venture between Eicher Motors and the Volvo Group.
Vikram Lal played a pivotal role in steering the growth of Eicher Motors and VECV. The company's flagship brand, Royal Enfield, became immensely popular under his leadership. Royal Enfield is known for its classic and retro-styled motorcycles and has a dedicated fan following both in India and internationally.
During his tenure as Chairman, Eicher Motors witnessed exponential growth and became one of the leading automotive companies in India. Under Vikram Lal's guidance, the company focused on innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction.
Vikram Lal retired as Chairman of Eicher Motors in 2016, but he continues to be associated with the company as a mentor and advisor. His contributions to the automotive industry in India have earned him several accolades and recognition. He has been honored with prestigious awards such as the JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
