She served as the Vice-President of the BJP's Odisha State Scheduled Tribe Morcha from 2002 to 2004. In 2000, she was elected as a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly from the Rairangpur constituency, and she served in the assembly till 2004. During her tenure in the assembly, she worked on issues related to education, health, and the welfare of tribal communities.

In 2014, Droupadi Murmu was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Mayurbhanj constituency in Odisha. She was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019. During her tenure as a Member of Parliament, she was a member of various parliamentary committees, including the Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

In May 2015, Droupadi Murmu was appointed as the Vice-President of the BJP's Odisha unit. She served in this position till 2019. On May 18, 2019, she was sworn in as the Governor of Jharkhand, becoming the first woman and the first tribal leader to hold the position.
